Organization and mission

The State Key Laboratory of Integrated Pest Management was created in March 1991 with from the World Bank and loan the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It officially won the accreditation from the expert committee in October 1993 organized by the State Planning Committee and the approval from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 2001 and 2006, the laboratory passed the national key laboratory evaluation organized by the National Natural Sciences Foundation of China. At present Dr. Kang Le is designated as the Laboratory Director and Prof. Zhang yaping as the chairman of the Laboratory Scientific Committee. The laboratory is one of the top agricultural pest research institutions in the country based on its outstanding scientists, excellent facilities and exceptionally diverse research programs.

The research of the laboratory is focused on the major agricultural pest insects and rodents which is an interdisciplinary endeavor including ecology, physiology, behavior, evolution biology, molecular biology, and information management, etc. Our specific research interests are in the areas of sustainable management of major pest populations based on micro and macro-sciences, Animal-plant Interaction, Insect resistance, pest adaptation and evolution at molecular level, impact of global change, biodiversity and GMO on major pest outbreaks and biosafety, and predication and monitoring systems for major pests. The laboratory is dedicated to develop the theory and technology for sustainable management of major agricultural pests (insects and rodents) through integrated approach, and consequently contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture in China.

Achievements

Since 1991, the laboratory produced 1135 publications in referred journals with 367 papers in SCI journals while 718 in CSCD journals; 3 monographs in English and 18 in Chinese; 31 national invention patents. It also has 14 technologies being transferred into practical pest management. The laboratory won various awards including 4 National Natural Sciences Achievement Award, 24 awards from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Agriculture and some Provincial Government for its excellence in research and contribution to the development of IPM theory and technology in China.

The laboratory offers outstanding academic programs for graduate student and postdoc preparation for careers in research, teaching, extension, business, or industry. Fourteen postdocs, 148 Ph.D and 60 Master students already graduated from the laboratory while currently there are still 3 postdocs, 65 Ph.D students, 37 Master program students in the training program. Most of them are under various scholarships due to their outstanding academic performances.

International Cooperations

The laboratory enjoys a long-standing and productive collaborations with many agencies, organizations, etc. worldwide including United States of America, Australia, England, France, Japan, Russia, the Netherlands, South Korea etc. The laboratory is particularly proud of those collaborations resulted in cooperative research projects, exchange visit of scientists, and co-organizing international conference such as our cooperation with the CSIRO, Australia in wildlife. The laboratory also enjoys numerous collaborations with various domestic institutions, one example is the four field research stations in Dangling Mts. Beijing, Hanna, Yaoyang in Hebei Province and Xilingele in Inner Mongolia.

Future Development Direction

Operating within the research matrix of the Chinese Academy of Sciences with particular consideration to major pest problems facing China, the laboratory are actively promoting inter and multi-disciplinary interaction and team approach to IPM research, training and extension. Contribute to the advancement of integrated pest management theory and practice. Produce high quality publications in highly regarded SCI journals. Further promote international cooperations.
